Coronavirus -social distancing, self-quarantine
In the present diaspora of the new coronavirus and COVID-19, the illness it causes, are spreading throughout most of the countries in the world. Phrases like “social distancing,” “self-quarantine” and “flattening the curve” are bringing to light in the media.
What do they mean, and how might they apply to us, our family and our community?
👉 What is social and physical distancing?
Social distancing is deliberately increasing the physical space between people to avoid spreading illness. Staying a minimum of six feet away from people lessens our chances of catching COVID-19. Wear a face-shield where social distancing can’t be practiced, especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. Cancelling events that are likely to draw crowds is an example of social and physical distancing.
While it's going to be disappointing to listen to that numerous sports events, cruises, festivals and other gatherings are being cancelled, there's a public health reason for these measures. These cancellations help stop or hamper the spread of disease allowing the health care system to more readily look after patients over time.

People who have been exposed to the new coronavirus and who are in danger for coming down with COVID-19 might practice self-quarantine. Health experts recommend that self-quarantine lasts 14 days. Two weeks provides enough time for them to understand whether or not they're going to become ill and be contagious to people.

Isolation is a health care term meaning keeping people who are infected with a contagious illness aloof from those that aren't infected. Isolation can take place at home or at a hospital or care facility. Special personal protective equipment will be used to look after these patients in health care settings.
👉 What is “flattening the curve?”
Flattening the curve refers to using protective practices to slow down the speed of COVID-19 infection. So hospitals have room, supplies and doctors for all of the patients who need care.
A large number of individuals becoming very sick over the course of a couple of days could overwhelm a hospital or care facility. Too many of us becoming severely ill with COVID-19 at roughly an equivalent time could lead to a shortage of hospital beds, equipment or doctors.

The pandemic can seem overwhelming, but in fact, everyone can help prevent the spread of COVID-19. By doing all of our part, we'll make an enormous difference to our health, and that of others around us.
