Look Back in Anger
John Osborne
Mock Test - 01
Look Back in Anger (1958) is a realistic play written by John Osborne. It emphases on the life and nuptial struggles of Jimmy Porter, an intelligent and educated but imperfect young man, of descent-class, and his equally capable yet middle-class wife Alison. Other characters, worthy mentioned in the play, include Cliff Lewis, a drunken Welsh lodger who tries to keep the peace; And Helena Charles, Alison's snotty friend.
Osborne drew inspiration from his personal life and it was his first successful journey as a playwright when he wrote Look Back in Anger for a failed marriage with Pamela Lane. The play coined the term "angry young man" by Osborne and those of his generation who described the harshness of truthfulness in theaters as opposed to the more escapist theaters characteristic of previous generations. It is this harsh reality that makes Look Back in Anger the first example of kitchen sink drama in theaters.
The play was adapted favorably to the theater community, became a huge commercial success, moving to the West End and Broadway, even touring Moscow. It is a success to go from a pugnacious playwright to a rich and famous personality and also won the Evening Standard Drama Award in 1956 as the most promising playwright. The play was revised into a well-known motion picture of the same name by Tony Richardson, starring Richard Burton and Mary Ure, released in 1959. The film was produced around 1956.
