ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, timetable, teams and venue

The first ICC Cricket World Cup was held in England and Wales in 1975, which was won by the West Indies. The Indian team won the third edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1983 and the tenth edition in 2011.

For the first time, the Cricket World Cup will be held entirely on Indian soil. The former three ICC World Cup tournaments were held in the successive years 1987, 1996 and 2011; India has shared venues with Pakistan and Bangladesh respectively.

That is why India hosted the 13th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023. The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 tournament is supposed to be held from 9 February to 26 March 2023, but in July 2020, the dates were unintentionally shifted to October and November due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was remarkable for India to be the first country to win the ICC Cricket World Cup as the host nation in 2011 and Australia repeated the record at the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

Criterion for the 2023 Cricket World Cup

There are 32 teams participating in the tournament. These 32 teams are categorized into three leagues namely Super League (13 teams), League 2 (teams) and Challenge League (12 teams). Which teams will qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup, and which ones will be eliminated from the World Cup qualifiers totally depend on the league's result.  Complementary qualifying tournaments determine promotion and reproduction within the leagues. Since this was the first use of the new process, teams were assigned to three leagues based on their ICC membership status, ODI status and rank from the ICC World Cricket League 2017–19.

As in the previous edition, there will be ten teams in this tournament. The main path to qualification will be the 2020-22 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League tournaments.

For the World Cup, the top seven teams from the thirteen competing teams in the Super League will qualify for Plus Host (India). Next the 2022 Cricket World Cup will be played by the remaining five teams. And finally two teams will play the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
