- Biography
Sourav Ganguly (born 8 July 1972), affectionately known as Dada (meaning "big brother") is an Indian cricket administrator, commentator and former national cricket team captain who was the 39th and current chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). During his playing career in Indian cricket, Ganguly established himself among the top batsmen in the world and as one of the most successful captains of the Indian national cricket team. While batting, he was particularly proud of the off-side and earned himself the title of God of the Off-Side.
As a cricketer, he played as a left-arm opening batsman and captained the Indian national team. In 2012, he was elected President of the BCCI and President of the Editorial Board with Wisden India. Before being elected President of the BCCI, he was the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal, the governing body of cricket in West Bengal, India.
Ganguly was introduced to the world of cricket by his elder brother Snehashish. He began his career playing for state and school teams. After playing in various Indian domestic tournaments, such as the Ranji and Duleep Trophy, Ganguly got his big break while playing for India on the England tour. He flagged his place in the Indian cricket team by scoring 131 runs. Ganguly's place in the team was confirmed after his successful performances in the series against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia by winning the Man of the Match award.
At the 1999 Cricket World Cup, he shared a 317-run partnership with Rahul Dravid, the highest overall partnership record in the history of a World Cup tournament. He led India to the 2003 World Cup final, where they defeated Australia. He was dropped from the team the following year due to a lack of individual performance. He returned to the national team in 2006 and showed successful batting.
As the captain of the Indian Premier League Twenty-20 cricket tournament, Sourav Ganguly joined the KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders) in 2006. The same year, after the home Test series against Australia, he announced his retirement from international cricket.
In 2004, he was awarded the Padma Shri Award, one of India's highest civilian awards. West Bengal Government had also awarded him with the Banga Vibhushan on 20 May 2013.
Ganguly, who is currently a part of the Supreme Court of India, has appointed an inquiry panel of Justice Mudgal's committee to probe the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal.
