Swami Vivekananda: Biography

Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863 - 4 July 1902) was a Hindu monk, philosopher, writer, musician and the main disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, a nineteenth-century Indian mystic. His father gave the name of Narendranath Dutta.

    👉  Swami Vivekananda: Early Life

    His nickname was Bireshwar or Bile and Narendra or Naren. He was born on 12 January 1863, on the day of the Capricorn festival, at 3 Gaurmohan Mukherjee Street in the Shimla area of   North Calcutta. His father Bishwanath Dutt was a renowned lawyer in the Calcutta High Court. Swami Vivekananda's mother's name was Bhubaneswari Devi.  She was in every sense a worthy spouse of Bishwanath. Her every step revealed personality and aristocracy. The poor never return empty-handed from him. He took care of all the household chores himself and regularly did puja lessons, scripture lessons and sewing. Don't forget to take the news of happiness and sorrow of the neighbors every day. Narendranath first learned English from his mother.

    From his childhood Narendranath was interested in spirituality. He had often meditated in front of the idols of Shiva, Rama, Sita and Mahavira Hanuman. He also had a special interest in saints. As a child, Vivekananda was very naughty.

    He was active in the spread of Hinduism, Indian Vedanta and Yoga philosophy in the United States and Europe. Many attribute to Vivekananda the credit for establishing good relations between different religions in the last half of the nineteenth century and for promoting Hinduism as one of the world's major religions.

    Swami Vivekananda was one of the pioneers of Hindu renaissance in India. At the same time in British India he led the idea of Indian nationalism. Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Monastery and the Ramakrishna Mission.

    His most famous discourse was "Brothers and Sisters of America ...," a Chicago Lecture delivered at the World Congress of Religions in Chicago, USA in 1893, through which he preached Hinduism for the first time in Western society.

    👉  Vivekananda’s Legacy and Passing

    On July 4, 1902, (the day of his death) Vivekananda woke up in the morning, meditating for three hours in the chapel of Belur Math. He walks with his brother-disciple Swami Premananda and also instructs him about the future of Ramakrishna Math. At 6:00 pm Vivekananda returned to his house and forbade him to disturb.  About two hours later, nearly 9:10 pm, he died while meditating.

    👉  Swami Vivekananda as the 'Bir Sannyasi': Conclusion

    However, in a word, Swami Vivekananda was a sage or a saint and as long as he was alive, he passed on to us all his knowledge, teachings, experience and spiritual thoughts acquired in this world. In India, Vivekananda is known as the 'Bir Sannyasi' and his birthday is celebrated on January 12 every year as the National Youth Day in India.
