Soumitra Chattopadhyay (Or Soumitra Chatterjee) was born on 19 January, 1935 in a house on Mirzapur Street near Sealdah Railway Station. His ancestral home is in Kaya village near Shilaidaha in Bangladesh. However, all the descendants of Soumitra Chattopadhyay's dynasty are residents of West Bengal. Many of his family lived in Krishnanagar.

From the time of Soumitra Chattopadhyay's grandfather, the members of Chattopadhyay family started living in Krishnanagar of Nadia district. This Famous Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee was a victim of a dangerous disease like corona virus for a long time. Because of this he was admitted to the Belle Vue Hospital, Kolkata where his health was continuously deteriorating. The actor was also kept on ventilator support for a long time in the hospital. But he lost the race of life due to the deteriorating condition day by day on November 15, 2020. He was 85 years old.
