Greek Gods and Goddesses
👉 Zeus/ Jupiter or Jove
King of gods, rules over the Olympian order. He is the youngest son of Titans, Cronus and Rhea. He is associated with thunderbolt and oak is his sacred tree. Animals and familiars associated to him are the eagle, the lion. As the lord of justice, he is also represented by the scepter and scales. He is brother and husband to Hera and Juno. He is known for clandestine affairs with mortals.
👉 Hera/ Juno
She is the queen of the gods through marriage with Brother Zeus. She is the youngest daughter of Cronus and Rhea. She is the goddess of marriage and family who is always concerned with the integrity of her own family because of Zeus’s continuous infidelity. She is generally portrayed as revengeful of her husband’s lover and children. Familiars and associated animals are Peacock, cuckoo and cow.
👉 Demeter / Ceres
She is the goddess of fertility, agriculture, nature and the maintenance of the seasonal cycles. Familiar is pig. She is represented mostly through sheaves of corn, but also cornucopia and torch.
👉 Poseidon /Neptune
He is the god of the seas, earthquakes and tidal waves. He is married to Amphitrite, the Nereid. Brother to Zeus and Hades, being the middle son of Cronus and Rhea. Symbols include trident, bull. Familiars are horse and trident.
👉 Athena/ Minerva
She is the goddess of wisdom, knowledge, reasons, intelligent activity, handicrafts and science, defence and strategic warfare. Familiar is owl, symbolically represented through olive tree. She is one of the most popular younger gods being the daughter of Zeus and Oceanic Metis. She rose out of her father’s head in full battle armour. She is often referred to as palls.
👉 Apollo /Apollo or Phoebus
One of the most loved and revered gods of Hellenic World, God of light, prophecy, philosophy, inspiration, music and arts. He is also associated with healing and medicine. Symbols include most popularly the lyre and the sun. Familiars include sawn and mouse. He is the twin brother of Artemis.
👉 Artemis, /Diana
She is the goddess of virginity, archery, the moon and all animals. Daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister to Apollo. She wields bow and arrow. Symbols include the moon, and associated to animals generally, but particularly to horse, deer, hound, she-bear, snake, cypress tree.
👉 Ares/ Mars
A God despised by all other gods. He is the God of war, violence and bloodshed. He is the son of Zeus and Hera. Symbols include spear and shield. Animals associated with him are the dog, vulture, serpent, and boar.
👉 Aphrodite/Venus
She is the goddess of love, beauty, desire and sexuality. Daughter of Zeus and Oceanic Dione, but legend also has that she was born out of sea foam when Uranus was castrated by his youngest son Cronus. Married to Hephaestus, but had many affairs, most notably with Ares.
👉 Hephaestus/ Vulcan
He is the blacksmith and craftsman to the gods. He is also the God of fire and forge. Symbolically, he is represented through anvil, fire, axe, tongs and hammer. Familiars include donkey and quail.
👉 Hermes/ Mercury
He is the messenger of the gods. God of Commerce, communication, borders, eloquence, diplomacy, thieves and games. Symbols include caduceus (a staff intervened with two snakes), winged saddles and cap. Familiars include stock and tortoise. He is one of the youngest Olympians. He is also the elder only to Dionysius.
👉 Hestia/ Vesta
She is the goddess of the hearth and the right ordering of domesticity and the family. She is the first child of Hera and Zeus. She is one of the twelve original Olympians.
👉 Dionysius or Bacchus / Bacchus
He is the youngest of the Pantheon. He is the god of wine, celebration and ecstasy. He is also the lord of the mysteries. He is the only god in the pantheon to be born of a mortal mother Semele. He is married to the Cretan princess Ariadne.
