Rosalind Character in ‘As You Like It’
Q. Draw the character of Rosalind in the play, As You Like It.

Answer: Rosalind was the only daughter of the Duke Sr. She was a beautiful young woman. Along with her father, she lived in the palace of Duke Frederick, who deposed her father and drove him out of the kingdom. The thought of her father's exile saddened her. But she never said any wrong words about her uncle, Duke Frederick. Her constant companion was Celia, the daughter of Duke Frederick. The two played, slept, ate and studied together.

Duke Frederick was well aware of Rosalind's qualities. After a wrestling match between Orlando and court wrestler, Duke Frederick expelled Rosalind. Celia rebelled against her father. Duke Frederick then pointed out Rosalind's qualities. She was very subtle in her judgment. She had perseverance and patience in her character. With these characteristic traits, she won the hearts of the people. Duke Frederick consoled her daughter, Celia "When she leaves, maybe your character will be revealed.” From all these utterances of Duke Frederick, it is clear that Rosalind possesses some excellent qualities that did not escape the notice of her oppressive uncle.

Rosalind possessed a romantic mind. She was a worshiper of brave people. She was kind to the sad people. These became clear when she behaved with Orlando. Orlando wrestled with the King’s wrestler. Everyone thought that the fight would be unequal. Rosalind tried to stop Orland from that competition. When Orlando won the competition, she bestowed her gold necklace to that young brave warrior, Orlando. But Rosalind kept her temper under control, when she met Orlando in the jungles of Arden. Rosalind then disguised as a shepherd, namely, Ganymede. She enjoyed Orlando’s courtesy of love. Only once she disclosed her irresistible emotions publicly. She lost consciousness when she heard of Orlando's injury. She also kept herself steadfast.

However, Rosalind was very prolific and intelligent. She revealed her true identity after her father's consent to her marriage to Orlando. She announced to Orlando in front of her father, Duke Sr. that he was in love with her. Considering all these incidents, we may safely deduce, Rosalind was one of the sweetest personalities in the play, As You Like It.
