Social Service – its importance & impact on Society
Society and people have a close relationship for ages. They are interdependent. Without people there is no society and without society there can be no people. Man is a social animal. He has to rely on society to fulfill his desires. Society gives him law and order, roads, hospitals. In return a man's duty is to do something for the good of the society and that too to do sincere social service.
Social service is the responsibility of a man from his birth to death. A person can meet all his needs from the society. He owes it to society. In this case it is his duty to retain what he has got.
For an individual, a debt to society can never be fully repaid, but social service is a way of giving back to society. There are many opportunities for community service everywhere. Helping children to the elderly is social service, lifting the fallen person is social service, carrying the blind across the street is social service. These beautiful works bring sunshine to a dark life.
There are several inspiring examples of social and humanitarian service. Florence Nightingale and the Lamp of the Lady revolutionized the nursing profession through her selfless service to the sick and dying. Madame Curie dedicated her life to using science to serve mankind.
However, social service is a great educational discipline that brings us out of our petty selves. It improves our mind, heart and soul. There is no greater happiness than the happiness we derive from the happiness of others.
Social service means selfless service to humanity. It is based on love for humanity. Social service develops the spirit of brotherhood among people.
Although the main duty of a student is to study hard, but if they can spare some time, they should do some social service according to their ability and inclination. The field of social service is very vast and enormous: education, sanitation, social reforms etc.
Finally, every country needs citizens who can volunteer their services for the good of the nation. The greatest evil in the essential parts of the country is illiteracy. Government alone cannot remove it. If all the educated people, especially the students and teachers devote themselves to this work, then this problem will be solved very soon. During the long holidays, they can go from village to village in small groups and teach the villagers to read and write.
Thus, individual happiness of man depends on social happiness. If everyone tries to make everyone else happy, everyone can make themselves happy through social service.
