Noida's Supertech Twin Towers, also considered India's tallest building Noida Twin Towers, were safely demolished on Sunday, August 28, 2022, following an order by the Supreme Court of India. A final check-up of explosives and associated systems to demolish the Noida Twin Towers was underway on Saturday, project officials said, adding that Supertech's illegal twin towers have been interconnected and 100-metre-long cables have been laid from the structure. Explosives remain.

The destruction of the glasses on August 28, 2022 ended a decades-long war between Supertech and the residents surrounding the Twin Towers.

After that, the process of demolishing the Twin Towers began and the deadline for the demolition of the Twin Towers was set.

Noida-based development company Supertech Limited has started construction of the project known as Emerald Court. The project began in the mid-2000s. The project included building of 3, 4 and 5 BHK flats.

The project was located near the expressway that connects the twin cities of Noida and Greater Noida. According to real estate websites, flats are now priced between Rs 1 crore and Rs 3 crore.

The project was supposed to have 14 nine-storied towers as per the plans submitted by New Okhla Industrial Development Authority, Noida.

The problem started after the Supertech plan was changed, which by 2012 was a complex of 15 buildings instead of 14. Each building in the twin towers was supposed to have 11 floors instead of nine. The modified plan includes two more towers that rose up to 40 stories above ground. The latter became the focus of a decades-long legal battle between the two residents and Supertech.

Supertech promised to have a 'green' area in front of Tower One. It was in that plan that the first changes were made in June 2005, according to documents submitted to the court as late as December 2006.

The 'green' area later became the land where Xian and Apex - the twin towers at the heart of the fiasco - would wake up.

The third revision of the building plan took place in March 2012. Emerald Court was now a project consisting of 15 towers with 11 floors each, and Xian and Apex expanded their heights from 24 floors to 40 floors.

Residents of the Emerald Court took note of this and demanded that the Sian and Apex- Twin Towers be demolished as they were built illegally. Residents have asked the Noida authorities to cancel the approvals given for the construction of Sian and Apex.

The residents then petitioned the Allahabad High Court to order the demolition of the towers. The Allahabad High Court agreed to the demand of the residents of Emerald Court. After considering all aspects, the High Court ordered the demolition of the Noida Twin Towers in April 2014.

But challenging the judgment of the High Court, Supertech Company appealed against the judgment of the High Court. As a result the whole matter reached the Supreme Court of India.

After much pushback on both ends, the Supreme Court of India, in 2021, ordered the demolition of the Noida Twin Towers on the grounds that the towers were constructed illegally.

In view of this, Supertech approached the Supreme Court for review of its order. After this many hearings were held in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court judgment also raised concerns about the safety of residents living in the vicinity of the Twin Towers.

As a result of this decision, the demolition deadline is gradually being pushed back. However, the Supreme Court refused to budge from its stand on the issue.

The Supreme Court said the Noida authority and Supertech were involved in "heinous complicity" and ordered the company to demolish the buildings at its own cost under the direction of the Noida authority.

The Noida Twin Towers were demolished on August 28, 2022. The work was carried out by Edifice Engineering, a Mumbai-based firm that had earlier demolished four illegal apartments near Kochi in Kerala.

The company employed a technique called implosion. More than 3,700 kg of explosives will be placed inside holes drilled in specific parts of the building structure that support the Ceyane and Apex. The blast was from the ground floor - that is, the explosives placed on the ground floor went off first. Then the floors that were placed next to the first floor were safely demolished.
