It is almost impossible to escape advertising. Hoardings stare at us from both sides of the road; Crude neon signs loom above the shops; Jingles and slogans assault our ears. These are all 20th century developments that grew alongside the spread of education and technological advances in radio and TV.

Advertisements cause a reasonable impact not only our eyes and ears but also our pockets. Its critics point out that 1.6% of national income is spent on advertising this century, and that advertising actually increases the price of goods. When a housewife buys a pound of flour, 5% of what she pays goes to some advertiser or other, even if she doesn't bother to ask the shopkeeper for a particular brand. If he buys a name brand of aspirin, the advertising cost of the name may represent up to 29% of what he pays.

These amounts seem like a great deal to pay for the dubious benefits of advertising, but there is something to be said for it. While some items are priced higher due to advertising, some are priced lower. Newspapers, magazines, commercial radio and television - all play an important role to draw attention to advertisements. The money they get from advertisers helps them reduce their production costs. Thus, we get information and entertainment at a lower price than we would otherwise charge. Therefore, what we lose in swing we gain in roundabout.

In addition to this very important consideration, advertising to some extent ensures that a product will maintain its quality. This gives rise to competition among manufacturers, which gives consumers a wider choice. Competition may even be successful in some cases, reversing the effects of advertising and lowering prices.
