Titan Sub Disaster: 'Titanic' Director James Cameron's reaction
James Cameron, the director of the 1997 blockbuster film Titanic, has reacted to the news of the Titan sub disaster in a series of interviews. He has expressed his sadness at the loss of the Titan submersible, which went missing on June 19, 2023, with all five passengers on board and has also criticized the design of the submersible, which he believes was unsafe.
In an interview with ABC News, Cameron said that he was "struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself," where the captain of the ship was repeatedly warned about ice ahead, but steamed full speed ahead into an ice field. "It's a very similar tragedy at the exact same site," he said.
Cameron also criticized the design of the Titan submersible, which he said was "too experimental" and "not certified." He said that he had warned the company that operated the submersible about the risks, but they had chosen to ignore his advice.
"I'm very sad for the people who lost their lives," Cameron said. "And I'm also angry that this could have been prevented."
The Titan submersible was a 21-foot tourist submersible that was designed to take passengers to the wreckage of the Titanic. It was operated by OceanGate Expeditions, a company that specializes in underwater exploration.
The submersible disappeared on June 18, 2023, while on an expedition to the Titanic wreck. The search for the submersible was unsuccessful, and it was later determined that it had suffered a "catastrophic implosion" due to the extreme pressure of the water at that depth.
The five passengers on board the Titan submersible were Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions; Hamish Harding, a British billionaire; Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani businessman; his 19-year-old son Suleman; and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a renowned French diver.
The loss of the Titan submersible is a reminder of the dangers of underwater exploration. It is also a tragedy that could have been prevented.
