22nd SCO Summit, 2023
The 22nd SCO Summit will be held on July 4, 2023 in a virtual format. India is the current chair of the SCO and will be hosting the summit for the first time. The summit is expected to be attended by the leaders of the SCO member states, which are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan, Iran, and Belarus.
What is SCO?
The SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) is a Eurasian political, economic, and security cooperation organization founded in 2001 by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan became full members of the SCO in 2017, and Iran became an observer state in 2005.
The SCO summit is the supreme decision-making body of the organization. It is held annually at alternating venues among the member states. In this year, 2023 the SCO summit will be the 22nd SCO Summit and will be held virtually on July 4, 2023, under the chairmanship of India. The summit was attended by the heads of state of all eight member states, as well as the observer states of Iran and Mongolia.
22nd SCO Summit: Discussion
The summit discussed a wide range of issues, including security, economic cooperation, and counter-terrorism. The leaders also exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and the Ukraine crisis.
The summit concluded with the adoption of a joint declaration, in which the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of the SCO charter and expressed their determination to further strengthen cooperation among the member states.
