Chennai, 06 August, 2023: In a heartbreaking turn of events, the racing community mourns the loss of a rising star, Copparam Shreyas Hareesh, a 13-year-old prodigious bike racer who met with a fatal accident during the National Motorcycle Racing Championship (NMRC) at Irungattukottai, Chennai. Shreyas, who had made history earlier this year as the first Indian to reach the World Championship final in two-wheeler racing held in Spain, tragically lost his life on Saturday due to a devastating crash.

Affectionately known as 'The Bengaluru Kid,' Shreyas captivated the hearts of racing enthusiasts with his remarkable skill and determination. During the third round of the race, disaster struck as Shreyas skidded on his 200cc motorbike, causing his helmet to come off. Another rider, unable to avoid the collision, ran over Shreyas, leading to a fatal head injury.

Immediate medical attention was rendered, and Shreyas was swiftly transported to the hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he was pronounced dead upon arrival, leaving the racing world in shock and sorrow.

The news of Shreyas' untimely demise has cast a somber shadow over the ongoing National Motorcycle Racing Championship. In response, the Madras Motor Sports Club has decided to cancel the remaining races scheduled for the weekend as a mark of respect and in recognition of the profound loss suffered by the racing community.

Shreyas' journey to the upper echelons of motorcycle racing was nothing short of inspirational. He marked his presence on the international stage by becoming the first Indian to reach the World Championship final in two-wheeler racing, competing in the FIM Mini-GP World Championship held in Spain. Displaying incredible prowess and determination, he secured a commendable 5th and 4th position in the first and second races, respectively.

The young racer's ascent to stardom began in India, where he clinched the FIM Mini-GP championship in 2022. His exceptional talent caught the attention of TVS, who took him under their wing and provided training, along with a TVS bike, for his races. Shreyas continued to dominate, winning the first four races in the rookie category before advancing to the pro-stock 165cc open division.
