Atal Setu, India’s longest Sea Bridge | Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL)

Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), is a 21.8-kilometre-long bridge that connects Sewri in Mumbai to the Nhava Sheva area in Raigad district. The bridge was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12, 2024. The bridge is named after the former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The Atal Setu is the longest sea bridge in India and the second longest sea bridge in Asia. The bridge is a major infrastructure project that will improve connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, as well as between Mumbai and the rest of India. The bridge will also improve connectivity between South Mumbai and the newly built Navi Mumbai International Airport. The bridge is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from 61 minutes to 16 minutes.

The Atal Setu is a six-lane cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 1,600 meters. The bridge has a total of 101 spans, of which 57 are cable-stayed spans. The bridge is made of concrete and steel and has a width of 26 metres. The bridge is designed to withstand earthquakes and other devastating natural disasters.

The construction of the Atal Setu began in 2017 and was completed in 2023. The bridge was built by a consortium of Indian and foreign companies. The total cost of the project was ₹17,840 crore.
