Indian Navy thwarted a piracy attempt on FV Omaril, an Iranian-fagged vessel

By a Staff reporter – February 3, 2024: In a swift and decisive action, the Indian Navy successfully thwarted a piracy attempt on an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel, FV Omaril, on Friday, February 2nd. The incident occurred off the east coast of Somalia, a region notorious for pirate activity.

According to Indian Navy officials, a Rapid Patrol Aircraft (RPA) detected suspicious activity around FV Omaril, prompting the deployment of the warship INS Sharda, already engaged in anti-piracy operations in the area. Upon arrival, the crew of INS Sharda confirmed that the vessel had been boarded by seven armed pirates who had taken the crew hostage.

Employing its onboard helicopter and fast boats, INS Sharda swiftly encircled FV Omaril and issued warnings to the pirates. The resolute and professional actions by the Indian Navy team, coupled with the overwhelming presence of the warship, forced the pirates to abandon the vessel and flee the scene.

The entire crew of FV Omaril, comprising 11 Iranian and 8 Pakistani nationals, were rescued unharmed. Following the successful operation, INS Sharda conducted a thorough inspection of the vessel to ensure the safety and well-being of all onboard.

“This operation is a testament to the Indian Navy's unwavering commitment to maritime security and the safety of life at sea,” stated Commander Vivek Madhwal, spokesperson for the Indian Navy. “Our relentless efforts in the region continue to safeguard vital shipping lanes and deter criminal activities.”

This incident highlights the ongoing threat of piracy in the Indian Ocean region, particularly off the Somali coast. The Indian Navy has played a crucial role in curbing piracy in recent years, deploying warships and aircraft for regular patrols and conducting coordinated operations with regional and international partners.

The successful intervention in the FV Omaril case demonstrates the Navy’s continued vigilance and its capability to effectively respond to such threats.
